A NEW CHAPTER
Check out our latest supplement line.............
"Since NEW CHAPTER'S beginnings, people have often asked me, why the name? What does it really mean? To me it is actually a double meaning.
Though herbal medicine has for millennia been the predominant medicinal system practiced worldwide, it has sadly been suppressed or scorned in the United States. 25 years ago, when we started NEW CHAPTER, one would often travel hours to find a doctor who might have a mind to holistic or complementary concepts and even rarer was the doctor who might feel comfortable with botanicals. I envisioned that through our model of a kinder and gentler approach to health through herbal supplementation, we would help herald a NEW CHAPTER for our culture of reconnection with our healing roots.
The second meaning for NEW CHAPTER has to do with our commitment to always make a contribution-to innovate-to provide a NEW CHAPTER in nutritional supplementation, not simply offer another copy of the same thing. Two good examples of this are our Organic Whole-Food Probiotic Nutrients and our Herbal Therapeutics. Years ago, all vitamins and minerals were sold in their purified or isolated non-food form. This inspired NEW CHAPTER-we created and offered nutrients in their most natural and active whole food probiotically cultured form. While called natural, herbal extracts were often extracted with harsh solvents and then chemically manipulated to deliver a high concentration of a single component. Our NEW CHAPTER in herbal extraction was to offer, for the first time, a full spectrum of herbal healing components utilizing a chemical solvent-free supercritical extraction.
I look forward to the years ahead and the opportunity to continue creating more NEW CHAPTERS to enhance the well-being of all."-Paul Schulick, CEO and founder of New Chapter
"Deliver the Wisdom of Nature"
"This has always been NEW CHAPTER'S mission, and in service to this mission we show our love for the planet and all creatures that make it their home. It is a humble duty, for we never substitute our judgement for Mother Nature's. Simply put, she got it right the first time. That means when turmeric is rich with many hundreds of healing phytonutrients, we don't isolate out a chemical that some today may guess is the "active principal" of the herb. For us, and in Nature, the entire herb is active, and in that wholeness there is both safety and efficacy. And when Nature decided to create nourishment for humans, it wasn't in the form of isolated chemical crystals and mineral salts. It was in the complex genius of wholesome organic foods. We think Nature got it right the first time, so that principle guides NEW CHAPTER in everything we do.
Organic ingredients finds expression in our Probiotic Nutrients, the world's first cultured whole-food vitamins and minerals made with organic ingredients. We have always been inspired by the worldwide organic movement, and we are proud to give supporters of organic practices a vitamin choice in harmony with their lives."-Tom Newmark President of New Chapter
"Innovation has always been the key factor in NEW CHAPTER formulations. We chose the name, NEW CHAPTER, in keeping with our commitment to only develop products that would augment and improve the supplement market. Is it worthy? Is it pure? Does it utilize the herb in its whole form? And does it open a new chapter in its category? These were the questions we asked ourselves with each new idea. Now more than 20 years later, NEW CHAPTER products are industry leaders for purity, efficacy and ingenuity.
It's fitting for NEW CHAPTER, a company founded on the marriage of scientific research with traditional herbal wisdom, has found its way into the laboratories and clinics of some of today's most pioneering medical researchers.-Barbi Schulick, Founder and Director of Sustainability

THE SKINNY ON FATS
Health experts keep changing the story on fats. First we were told that polyunsaturated fats were better then saturated fats. Then it was discovered that refined polyunsaturates were favorite targets for free-radical attack. Next, monounsaturated fats took center stage and have remained in spotlight ever since. The Mediterranean Diet, with its high intake of olive and other oils high in monounsaturates, offers several important safeguards against cardiovascular disease, cancer and overall mortality. (Laino, de Lorgeril, Kokkinos, Trichopoulou). While monounsaturated fats are important for maintaining optimum health and smooth supple skin, it’s the kind of fatty acids and antioxidants they contain that make up the real story.
Designer Oils
Dark green unrefined “extra virgin” olive oils have a delightful full-bodied flavor due to its natural antioxidants. Not only are the oils of various olive cultivars distinctive, they all help fight arterial plaque buildup. Olive oil has a long history in Europe as both food and medicine also used in making dressings, marinades, and sauces for dipping.
Macadamia nut oil is another designer oil that is fast gaining a reputation among chefs and health experts. The nuts originated in Australia where they were staples in the diets of Aborigines. Like olive oil, macadamia nut oil is rich in antioxidants and contains the highest levels, greater than 80% monounsaturates, primarily palmitoleic (omega-7) than other oils.
Macadamia nut oil products found in mass market are typically refined, with many of the antioxidants removed. The highest levels of antioxidants in macadamia nuts are found in shells. During cold processing, some of these antioxidants leech in oil, increasing its antioxidant potential. Unrefined and organic oils have a golden color, pleasing nutty aroma and buttery flavor. Scientists have found that macadamia nut oil lowers LDL cholesterol and triglycerides, and may help prevent stroke. It is delightful on veggies, in soup on popcorn, and as a replacement for butter baking.

Fighting Obesity - What Do I Put in My Child's Lunch?
We begin the 21st century with a startling setback in life expectancy for our youth. Some experts even fear that today's kids might not live as long as their parents. That's despite the recent advances in medicine that have been credited with extending life span.
The Childhood Obesity Epidemic
The obesity epidemic is occurring in boys & girls in all 50 states. It's happening in younger children as well as adolescents, across all socioeconomic strata, and among all ethnic groups. At a time when we have learned that excess weight has significant and troublesome health consequences, we see our children gaining weight to a dangerous degree and at an alarming rate. According to a 2004 report from the Centers for Disease Control, the number of overweight 6 to 11 year olds more than doubled in the past 20 years-going from 7 percent in 1980, to 18.8 percent in 2004. The rate among adolescents between 12 to 19 more than tripled, increasing from 5% to 17.1%.
An estimated 61% of overweight young people have at least one additional risk factor associated with becoming over weight. These include heart disease, high cholesterol or high blood pressure-factors that have been traditionally associated with much older adults. In addition, children who are over weight are at greater risk for bone and joint problems, sleep apnea, and social and psychological problems such as stigmatization and poor self-esteem. Overweight young people are more likely than their normal weight peers to become overweight or obese adults, adding additional risk factors such as stroke, several types of cancer, and osteoarthritis.
The consensus among pediatricians, school administrators, parents, and government officials is that healthy lifestyle habits, including healthy eating and physical activity, can lower the risk of becoming overweight and developing related diseases. Associated problems with a growing overweight population are reduced productivity, increased disability, and a greater number of overweight individuals requiring nursing home care as they move into retirement. Clearly the centerpiece of reducing childhood obesity is to reduce its health related and economic costs.
Nutrition Solutions
Clearly, we must tackle this problem head-on in order to save our youth. It is the beginning as a grass roots movement in the classroom and will involve nutritionists, enlightened teachers, pediatricians, natural food retailers, manufacturers and suppliers of healthy foods. Beginning in the opening weeks of school 2006-2007, a pilot program to teach 6th graders how to eat for better health will be instituted in Chico, California. As the program is perfected, it will be offered nationwide. This is how the plan unfolds....
Show Kids How:
*Healthy snacks can be tasty and satisfying by letting them sample them
*Adding color and variety to meals increases taste and interest
*Real fruit juice and fruit are better than sodas
*Use of smaller plates, bowls and cups will help control serving sizes
*To become ambassadors of better nutrition in their families
